What is the IEC?
The Internal Engineering Competition (IEC) is Ontario Tech’s annual showcase of innovation, teamwork, and problem-solving. Students form teams and tackle real engineering challenges across multiple unique categories. Winners from IEC go on to represent Ontario Tech at the Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC).

IEC is designed to test both technical expertise and soft skills like communication, leadership, and creativity. Whether you’re a first-year just starting out, or a senior student looking to push your limits, there’s a competition stream tailored for you.
Competition Categories
Re-Engineering
Take an existing product and make it better — safer, more efficient, or more useful. Redesign with creativity and purpose.
Programming
Build software solutions for real-world problems. Code, debug, and innovate in a fast-paced, team-based challenge.
Eng. Communications
Explain complex engineering ideas in clear, engaging ways. Deliver impactful presentations that connect technical skill with everyday understanding.
Senior Design
Tackle a surprise engineering challenge in teams of four. Prototype, problem-solve, and present your design to judges — creativity and teamwork are key.
*(3rd and 4th year only)
Junior Design
First and second-year students create quick, hands-on prototypes with simple materials. Show off problem-solving skills under time pressure.
